  1. I wanted to create a design that would celebrate my wedding anniversary. The colors for our wedding were Apricot and Toast Brown.
I used the colors of our wedding reception to create my September block for the Crazy Quilt Journal Project 2018 (CQJP). I found an embroidery pattern with a pair of birds from Urban Threads. I did several elaborate seam treatments. It seemed appropriate to include a lot of flowers on this block. I also used three kinds of lace, blue flat lace, variegated tatted lace and a hand dyed lace motif.
The bird and flower design were done with several techniques, the flowers are appliqued felted and both leaves and vines are stitched with green pearl cotton. The leaves are embroidered with the Closed Fish-bone Stitch and vines are embroidered with the Chain Stitch. The birds were made with an appliqued base of felted wool and topped with embroidered silk ribbons, in gray and white.
In the space below the Doves and flowers is a spider web stitched in a silver metallic threads and a Peach colored spider sits on the web.
A rose cluster is in the upper left corner. It is made of Woven Spider Web Roses and Fargo Roses, the leaves are Detached Chain Stitches, French Knots.
In the right upper corner is an appliqued lace motif in the shape of a flower with leaves. The motif is embellished with glass pearls.
A Button Cluster is in the lower right corner. All the buttons are glass and are antique or vintage. The seam above the Button Cluster, has an appliqued piece of Tatted Lace and a combination of a curved pattern done in Chain Stitch and Bullion Knot Roses with Detached Chain Stitch for leaves.
On the lower left corner seam is stitch with a Curved Pattern done in Stem Stitches. The Combination stitches are Detached Chain Stitches and Fly Stitches at the base of the groups of Detached Chain Stitched. Pink Bugle Beads are sewn between Detached Chain Stitches and trios of green seed beads are sewn at the base of each flower.
The seam above and to the left of the pair of birds, is done in Chevron Stitches, the combination stitches are curved flower stems.
The seam above and to the right of the pair of birds, is done in Cretan Stitches for the base. The Combination Stitches for the top include Fargo Roses and Ribbon Stitch on either side of each Fargo Rose. The combination stitch for the bottom include Straight Stitches done in a fan shape with seed beads sewn at the ends of each stitch. Between the Cretan and Straight Stitches, graduated sizes of peach colored glass pearls are sewn into the valleys of the stitches.
The base seam treatment next to the lace flower motif is done in half Buttonhole Stitch Wheel. The Combination Stitch is Detached Chain Stitch and glass pearls.
The seam between the Doves and the Button Cluster, is stitched in double rows of the Herringbone Stitch. The Combination Stitches are trios of Detached Chain Stitches and Straight Stitches. White pearls are stitched at the base of each trio and a white pearl seed bead are sewn at the ends of the Straight Stitches.
